Assignment 6: Expanding your visitors scripts
For this assignment you will use your new form-building skills to add
some useful and nice-looking data collection to the pages of your
choice. This assignment is all about designing your forms well and
using CGI to format nice-looking web pages. It is deliberately
open-ended...
For example, if you are developing a club page,
why not use the guestbook to establish a mailing list?
Ask for e-mail addresses! What other inforation might
people want to give you over the web? What else could
you learn about the people who use your pages?
Finally, we want you to use the conventional html stuff to format your
form and make the page look good: CGI can spit out images and colored
text, so don't limit your page to booring text and no formating!
The four steps to your assignment are:
1) Think of how you could use a form to your advantage
on the pages you are using it on. What data are you
collecting, how should you display it?
2) Develop a form to collect the data you want - it should
write to a file just like the first part of assignment 6.
3) Write a display script that brings up the data from the
file in a well-formatted page that includes graphics,
colored background, colored text and a table. This is
just the second script from assignment 6 with extra print
statements for formatting with HTML.
4) Write up a short paragraph explaining what you want to
accomplish with the form and attatch it to the bottom of
the page where the form is sitting.
As usual, questions should be directed to the hypernews and the
earlier you start the better of you'll be! :)
